Since 2013, actress and activist Diane Guerrero, 35, has graced screens as Maritza Ramos on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, Lina in Jane the Virgin, and most recently as Isabela Madrigal, the eldest, flower-producing daughter in Disney’s Encanto. The role Guerrero is most comfortable playing, however, is who she is IRL, a self-proclaimed intersectional mujerista.
What does that mean? Well, intersectionality is a term coined by pioneering scholar of critical race theory Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw to describe the layered effect of discrimination that Black women experience. The term has now evolved to include the different identities that one person may hold simultaneously.

“Intersectionality is so important because we’re intersecting at all times,” says Guerrero. “We have to really consider where we all meet, where we all differ, where we are in our status and our privilege, and how we grew up if we’re really talking about justice and equality.”

And as far as mujerista goes? That’s a word ideated by late theologian Ada María Isasi-Díaz, PhD, who was the chief theorist behind mujerista theology. Spanish for “womanist,” the term aims to delineate the special identity shared by poor, Hispanic, Catholic women. Some people, like Guerrero, have come to see it as a way of advancing the rights of all Latinx women. An intersectional mujerista, then, combines both of those ideologies to mean a multi-dimensional Latinx women (a demographic so often portrayed as one-dimensional), which Guerrero clearly embodies, as evidenced by the wide-ranging interview we had with her.

Well+Good sat down with Guerrero to discuss her activism, surprising-yet-handy beauty practices, and Encanto takeaways (pero, like, duh!).

Coming off a major career milestone, celebrating Encanto’s Oscar win for Best Animated feature, Diane Guerrero took time to chat with SheKnows about the lessons the movie teaches and much more. “I have such a big family. I feel like everyone really filled one of those roles. My mom really connected with Mirabel and Luisa together, which is what she told me when we saw the film,” she said. “That was really beautiful to see — this woman who definitely didn’t grow up with any type of representation to see herself reflected in a film that her own daughter is in. It was really special to see.”

As for playing the impossibly gorgeous Isabela in the Disney film, the 35-year-old actress said, “There’s always going to be expectations from your family, from your community, from society, but ultimately, it’s up to you. It’s up to you what you want to do, [and] who you want to be. And whatever that is, [it] doesn’t have to be perfect. I think that’s a theme with a lot of the characters in Encanto, but especially with Isabela, who is sort of like this example of perfection and with that comes a lot of expectations.”

And that’s why Guerrero has partnered with the personal care brand Love Beauty and Planet to give back to Latinas who are working to make their communities cleaner, greener, and more just. Guerrero is working with the brand to support the launch of a body wash collection and their efforts with a Latina-owned and led organization Mujeres de La Tierra. Specifically, Love Beauty and Planet will be making a $50,000 to fund Vamos a la Playa, a program run by the group that teaches the community about public access to the beaches of Southern California and marine life.

” . . . As Latinas, we’re the head of the households, you know, in most cases, and we are constantly providing, providing for our families. And sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves, you know what I mean?” said the Orange Is the New Black alum. “Which is why I am so happy to partner with Love Beauty and Planet, because it aligns so well with my values. It aligns so well with what I believe has been helping me throughout my entire life.”

The Disney soundtrack canon officially has its first new addition of the 2020s, thanks to the accompanying set to the breakout hit animated film Encanto. The soundtrack first topped the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Jan. 15, while also notching a pair of top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, the Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (credited to Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast) and “Surface Pressure” (Jessica Darrow) — with “Bruno” becoming the first song from an animated Disney film to hit No. 1 since 1993 (on the chart dated Feb. 5).

But where do the two huge hits (along with other charting songs from Encanto) rank among the biggest-ever hits from animated Disney films on the Hot 100, including classics from ’90s Golden Age blockbusters Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, as well as more recent favorites from 2010s hits Frozen and Moana? Enter Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Disney songs ranking — the 30 biggest hits from animated Disney movies in Hot 100 history — which is now led by “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

“Bruno” tops the listing after having spent five straight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 this winter — most recently on the chart dated March 5 — which is the longest any hit from an animated Disney movie has spent atop the chart. (The song currently ranks at No. 8, on the Hot 100 dated April 9, with a total of 14 weeks spent on the chart thus far.)

It’s the highest of seven songs from Encanto to appear on the ranking: “Surface Pressure” appears below it at No. 7 (having hit No. 8 on the Feb. 12-dated Hot 100), followed by “The Family Madrigal” (Stephanie Beatriz, Olga Merediz & Encanto Cast, which peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100 dated Feb. 5) at No. 12, “What Else Can I Do?” (Diane Guerrero & Stephanie Beatriz, a Hot 100 peak of No. 27) at No. 14, “Dos Oruguitas” (Sebastian Yatra, No. 36) at No. 17, “Waiting on a Miracle” (Stephanie Beatriz, No. 48) at No. 21 and “All of You” (Stephanie Beatriz, Olga Merediz, John Leguizamo, Adassa, Maluma & Encanto Cast, No. 71) at No. 27.

“This is great news because it shows the power, the colors and how much Latin culture means to the world. It invites people to create and talk about diversity — the chachachá rhythm on which the song is built is proof of that,” says Colombian singer and actor Mauro Castillo, who voices Felix in Encanto and performed his part of “Bruno” at the Academy Awards in March. “For me, as an artist, it is a huge step in my career, and as an Afro Colombian it is one more step towards inclusion. Productions like this one help show a bigger picture of who we are as a nation. As Colombians we have the possibility of writing thousands of stories based on our resilience.”

The Oscars are trumpeting the “first live performance of ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’” from Encanto for their show on March 27.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks, an astonishing showing for a multi-character theatrical piece. The song is performed by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the cast of Encanto on the Encanto soundtrack, which is currently in its ninth nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Another of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs from Encanto, “Dos Oruguitas,” is competing for best original song at the Oscars.

The Academy hasn’t officially announced that all five best original song nominees will be performed on the show, but that is widely expected. If they are, on top of the performance of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” the show will have a strong music focus.
